You’ve spent 💵 on products and made an investment in yourself, but unfortunately, even the best made, highest quality skincare doesn’t last forever.
•
Take a look at these identical serums from @skinceuticals. The brand new color is straw-like, consistency is fairly thin and any scent is mild. Now compare that with the amber colored, thicker and more pungent product and it’s easy to tell which one has oxidized!
•
If your products have changed their color, consistency, texture, or smell, it’s likely time to pitch and replace. These changes can signify oxidation and may mean that your products aren’t going to be effective for you anymore. In some cases, it can even be detrimental to use products once they’ve undergone this change. Stick to the expiration date and you'll always have a product that you can trust!

Lauren returned tonight from a snowy ski trip to Sun Valley, Idaho. Ski trips are relaxing and fun, but can wreak havoc on your skin! Not only are you exposed to stronger UV rays at high altitude, but the cold & wind can cause serious cheek chapping. In order to combat this irritation, Lauren used these products while in Idaho:
•
@isclinical Active Serum: a great first layer to protect the skin.
•
@skinceuticals Hyaluronic Acid Serum: helps to lock in moisture, so skin isn’t prone to irritation.
•
@larocheposayusa AOX Serum: more antioxidants and an SPF 50 to protect against strong UV rays while on the mountain.
•
@eltamdskincare UV Lip Balm: protects from UV rays and provides a barrier against the wind.
•
Before bed, a @florapybeauty Hydration Mask, more Skinceuticals HA Serum and @skinmedica Triple Lipid Repair cream for an overnight moisture surge.
•
Knee deep powder for three days straight was exciting and made for a very fun trip! She’s happy to be home though... lots of fun stuff in store for @theskinsisters this week!
Marie Claire magazine published an article this week about a skincare product that Kate Middleton swears by. As girls who grew up watching Prince William and Prince Harry, we have a keen interest in what those royals are up to, so we decided to checked out Biotulin.
•
The main ingredients are a plant-derived topical anesthetic that supposedly relaxes muscle movement (we are skeptical...) and hyaluronic acid, which helps skin hold on to moisture. Hyaluronic acid is a great ingredient that does make the skin look smoother when applied (tiny wrinkles seem to disappear in moisturized skin, compared to dry skin.)
•
We're not convinced that this product is worthy of Princess Kate, but let us know if you've tried it and feel differently!

Little Zoe has been with us for about two weeks now - though we aren’t quite sure if it feels like two days or two years, because the time goes by so differently with an infant!
•
Most important is that she is healthy and happy. So, what has Brooke been using for her skin?
•
A study published in 2014 found that the use of emollients helps to protect and stabilize the skin’s barrier, and was also shown to decrease the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (eczema). After her bath, Zoe gets a thin layer of @cerave Healing Ointment to help with this. Zoe also developed some little cracks on her ankles because her brand new skin was so dry, and within one night of using the ointment they were looking so much better!
•
We are just about to finish the gentle cleanser from the hospital, and begin using @mustelausa Stelatopia cleansing creme for bathtime.

Lauren planned the wrong week for her Florida vacay! It’s so cold here in Minneapolis that schools are closed this week due to low temps!
•
Which makes this the perfect time to think back to the few days in Florida! A trip with the family, good friends, and nice weather can’t be beat, but of course the nice weather made us think about how to best protect our skin when we’re outdoors.
•
UPF clothing is one of our favorite tricks for protecting our skin (and the kids!) without much extra effort. @coolibar makes super cute and easy-to-wear UPF clothing for both kids and adults. They were gracious enough to gift Lauren’s crew for this trip, and we are now completely hooked. The clothing was high quality, comfortable, and fashionable. 3 different people stopped Lauren to ask who made her striped sun shirt!
•
We just posted a full review of all of the Coolibar products we tried on The Skin Sisters site. Check it out and comment below if you have questions!

It’s absolutely freezing here in Minneapolis, and forecasts are showing no signs of warmth anytime soon! ❄️ When it’s cold and dry, hydration is key for keeping your skin healthy. Here are a few of our favorite winter skin favorites to get you through this cold spell. ⛄️ Hyaluronic acid, hydrating masks, ointment spray, and lip treatments! There are so many other winter skincare products that we also love, but aren’t pictured - oils, scrubs, and body creams keep our skin healthy all winter!

@outsidemagazine recently published an article dissuading the general public from using daily SPF, and claimed that sunscreen use does more harm than good. Shockingly, this article also suggested more frequent unprotected sun exposure for everyone.
•
To say that we disagree wholeheartedly with this article is an understatement. We believe in evidence based medicine, we believe in basing medical recommendations off of that evidence, and we believe in supporting literature that is based in fact and not just opinion.
•
The article from Outside magazine is none of these things and presents a direct contradiction to facts. Facts like:
•
- 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with a skin cancer this year.
- Certain types of skin cancers including melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma can kill you.
- Unprotected exposure to UV causes skin cancers.
•
Do we want you to sit in a dark basement, never enjoy a day at the beach or on a boat? Absolutely not! We want you to be safe in the sun. Wear sunscreen. Everyday. Be aware of your skin and the moles and freckles that are on it and take note when things are changing. We want you to be healthy and, just like a yearly teeth cleaning or physical exam, get your preventive skin cancer check with your dermatology office. We want you to know the ABCDE’s, so that you can play an active role in the health of your skin.
•
We don't stay inside and you shouldn't either. It's about knowing how to keep your skin safe (ways that are backed by excellent research over many year) and understanding that sunscreen is not a 'marketing ploy', but a useful tool to protect your skin.
•
