This past weekend, Lauren ran into a neighbor who asked her, ‘please will you post some recommendations for ladies over 50?’ The truth is, we hear this request often! Thankfully, it’s never too late to begin a new skincare routine.
Skincare for mature skin is not dissimilar to skincare for youthful skin. There are the basics, like sun protection, antioxidants and retinoids. However, there are also specific concerns that women (and men!) in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s should focus on.
The lower lip is one of the most common areas that we find skin cancer and precancerous spots – applying an SPF lip balm (like this great one from Elta MD) regularly can help protect your lower lip. The décolletage is another area that requires extra attention as you age. Many people spend all of their time and money on skincare for the face, but neglecting the chest can lead to sun spots and wrinkles on the very visible area. Neocutis makes a fantastic décolletage serum that addresses the unique concerns of this area.
Revox serum from Revision Skincare is a really neat product that we often recommend to our mature patients. It’s an antioxidant serum devised to be used on areas of movement (think treatment of the lines around the mouth and crows feet around the eyes.) This serum is best used in conjunction with Botox to strengthen the skin in these areas to lesson the development of tiny wrinkles.
Lastly, aging skin can really benefit from some serious moisture. We recommend using a moisturizing cleanser like the Circcell one pictured, a thick & creamy eye cream like Skinceuticals AGE Eye Complex, and a great moisturizer (we love Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre, which can be purchased at Target!)
Like most skincare regimens, we recommend finding a daily sunscreen that you love, an antioxidant serum to use each morning, and a gentle retinol or retinoid for evening. To round it out, consider a subtle self tanner or spray tan if you like that look.
We hope this helps! It’s never too late to start using great skincare.
