A question we receive often during the summer is “My skin is oily and shiny – do I still need to use a moisturizer?”.
Oily skin is really just characterized by an overproduction of sebum from our sebaceous glands. This overproduction can lead to clogged pores and acne breakouts, on top of causing the skin to look shiny. Sebum is naturally produced by our glands to help maintain our skin’s protective barrier and support acid balance. Sebum, importantly, helps to lock in moisture to our skin cells; however, it does not provide that moisture.
Because sebum doesn’t provide moisture, it is so important that even the oiliest of skin types continue to use moisturizers to provide necessary hydration to the skin cells. Choosing the right moisturizer is important! Choosing an ‘oil free’ moisturizer may help combat extra oily shine, and choosing a product with ceramides helps to lock in the moisture for optimal benefit to your skin.
Some great options to use on oily skin are @cerave PM moisturizer or @neutrogena Hydro-Boost Gel Cream.
